SQUASH WALES FIRST EVER STREET GAMES FIT & FED EVENT

15th June 2021

JuniorLocal news

On Wednesday 2nd June, Squash Wales were invited to Duffryn Community Centre to take some squash sessions and give young people living in disadvantaged communities the opportunity to try out squash.

The Street Games initiative, Fit & Fed allows all young people living in disadvantaged areas to have somewhere to take part in activities whilst also being provided with food during the school holidays. Squash Wales would like to thank Alex at Duffryn Community Link and Rachel at Street Games for offering us the opportunity to come down and be a part of the fantastic initiative.

The session proved to be a huge success with over 38 children between the ages of 9-16 getting involved and most importantly, having fun. Every child that attended the Fit and Fed event, picked up a ball and racket each and gave the sport a go.

There were 2 individuals in particular that showed great initiative to get involved and compete against each other. The 2 boys (pictured) played against each other for the full 2 hours and showed fantastic commitment and progression.

We were able to signpost all interested participants to their local club, Newport Squash Club. We would also like to give a special mention to coach, Owen Heyes of Hirwaun Squash Club for coming down to support the session at short notice.

We can’t wait to get involved in future Fit and Fed events during school holidays and look forward to working in partnership with Street Games over the next year.
