Maesteg Squash Club held their first junior development event.
On Wednesday 30th May 2018, during May half-term, Maesteg Squash Club held their first junior development event. A total of 16 juniors turned up to play on the day, travelling from a wide range of different clubs across South & West Wales. These included Maesteg, Fairwater, Llantrisant, Newport, Carmarthen, David Lloyd – Swansea and Hirwaun.
Once the players had signed in, they got warmed up with some ¾ court, whilst organizer, S.E. Wales development officer Sarah Clode organized the players into 2 groups. Both groups had 8 juniors playing in a round robin format throughout the day, allowing the juniors the opportunity to play everyone within their group, 1 game up to 15 points.
After a good warm up, matches were underway by about 10.30am. First up from group 1 was Ioan Vs Aled and Dylan Vs Lewis. In group 2, it was Lucy vs Osian and Megan Vs Anwen. The other players in each group marked the first matches. There were some great matches played and everyone took their turn in marking and refereeing. Some of the players had never marked a match before, but by the end of the event and with some help from the more experienced players, everyone had a go and did a great job ?
The matches were exciting to watch and played in great spirit, with lots of support and encouragement from everyone involved. After some close matches, there was just enough time to squeeze them all into the day, before it was time for the presentation.
