The best things in life happen by chance, at least that was the case for Sian Johnson.
Llanelli-born Sian (63) started playing tennis from the age of 14 and hadn’t heard about squash until her coach suggested she play to keep up her racket skills during the winter.
Sian said: “As soon as I was introduced to the sport, I didn’t play anything else, squash just took over my life. It’s given me a sense of purpose in life; something to achieve and work towards and that’s had a huge positive impact on my health.”
Fast forward 47 years, and Sian continues to spend much of her time on the squash court.
Playing the sport has taken her all over the world to countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Malaysia, representing both Wales and the UK in a number of international competitions. She has competed in prestigious tournaments including the Commonwealth Games, The British Open, and The Welsh Open. Her countless titles include; five Welsh Closed Senior titles, one Welsh Open Senior title, several County titles, two British Masters Closed (over 60) titles, and several Welsh National Masters Open and Closed titles, to name just a few.
Today, as well as playing competitively in various leagues and tournaments, Sian is also a qualified coach, nurturing upcoming talent between the ages 11-18 in the Squash Wales Academy – and shows no sign of slowing down. She also coaches the Junior Wales National squad and holds a Ladies Development session in Llanelli.
