Squash Wales Leader

Looking to deliver Squash to young people in a school or community setting? Are you a teacher looking to offer new activities to young people? The Squash Wales Leaders Award could be for you. This 3-hour workshop is aimed at teachers or Level 2 coaches (in any sport) who want to deliver squash to children and young people aged 5 and upwards. The course includes our flagship Junior Programme “Off the Wall”.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

During the 3-hour workshop you’ll learn:

  • Why young people play squash and understand their journey.
  • Rules of the game of Squash
  • Basic coaching techniques to help new players.
  • How to use Off the Wall resources to build and deliver sessions.
  • Tips for keeping young people playing the game.
Level 1

This One-day coaching award provides your first steps into coaching and is a pre-requisite for those wishing to take the Squash Wales Club Coaching Award (Level 2)

On completion, you will be able to coach squash independently to groups of beginner players of any age

Who it’s for: ideal if you’re an aspiring coach with limited experience of coaching squash or a parent/leader looking to coach beginners of any age or increase squash participation.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

You’ll learn several skills and techniques from how to organise and build rapport with players to basic techniques, tactics and ideas to deliver fun and engaging sessions to a variety of players. You’ll discover how to support, enhance and develop players, and attract new ones. The course is made up of the following topics:

  • Junior squash and how to deliver squash within a primary and secondary school environment.
  • Coaching different participants within a club or leisure centre setting.
  • An introduction to racket ball and how to organise informal play sessions.
  • Creating and nurturing effective squash and racket ball communities.

Level 2

A three-day contact time qualification during which candidates will learn the skills required to deliver the technical and tactical requirements of squash to juniors and adults at beginner and intermediate level, through the delivery of individual and group lessons.

Candidates will learn how to analyse player’s needs, plans for a series of lessons and to operate as a Club Coach

Who it’s for: Level 1 coaches wishing to take their tactical and technical coaching to the next level.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

There are approximately six weeks in between days two and three of the qualification – during which you will be required to conduct player analysis, plan, deliver and evaluate six lessons (two individual and four group lessons). You will also need to complete several coaching scenario-based questions.

Your course tutor will provide ongoing support throughout the duration of the Award.

At the end of the course, you need be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • Plan and deliver a programme of progressive individual and group training sessions in accordance with
  • Squash Wales coaching philosophy.
  • Implement ‘how to coach’ skills to create an inclusive, player centred and positive learning environment.
  • Deliver the player pathway from entry to club level, ensuring players maximise their desired potential.
  • Possess an open mind set, taking responsibility for own personal development.
  • To develop effective squash communities.

Level 3

An eight-day contact time qualification to enable candidates to analyse develop and deliver player centred coaching and delivery plans that cover all areas of a player’s personal development.

Who’s it for: Level 2 coaches wishing to coach the technical and tactical requirements of squash to both juniors and adults at advanced level (County and Regional) or support and mentor other coaches – as a Head Coach or Assistant Coach.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

During the course, you’ll take part in the following coaching workshops:

  • Strength and conditioning workshop(four hours):
  • Performance analysis and the coaching process:
  • Playing in partnerships:(three hours): delivered b David Evans, Squash Wales Performance Director.
  • Learning styles and skill games: (three hours): delivered by Greg Tippings, Squash Wales National Junior Coach.

At the end of the course you need to be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • diagnose faults in technique.
  • develop strategies to present feedback and enhance effectiveness.
