Over 35 / 40 Women Match Report. Edinburgh 2024.

The o35/40s ladies set off to Edinburgh Thursday evening all excited and raring to go. After a sunny Friday morning stroll around the city and a gentle hit the ladies were pumped up and ready to take on Scotland. It was a close fought 4-1 victory as the two nations battled hard in front of a raucous home crowd. We were last off the court, last to eat and last to get to bed – a great 3-2 encounter between Jenny and Katy made it the match of the evening!

Saturday morning the battle commenced, this time against England, although favourites for the title we planned to put up a very good fight and that we did! Anna stepped on court and although she was strapped up from the nights before ankle roll she gave it her all but unfortunately lost 3-1. Next to take to the court was our silent assassin Gemma, who played some great squash to win 3-1, next captain Gooding won 3-1 against a very tricky opponent in Polly, meaning Wales were 2-1 up in the fixture. Game of the match had to go to Bec’s v Michelle. Both left everything on court with Michelle coming out on top 11-8 in the fifth. All down to the final match, with sweaty palms and extra loud cheering we tried to get Jenny across the line but it wasn’t to be losing 3-1 giving England the 3-2 win.

With less than a half hour turn around again because we were the last off court and last to eat we took on Ireland for the silver medal. Anna was determined to finish on a high, Bec’s was adamant she had to win a match before she flew home, the silent assassin wanted to be undefeated, captain Gooding just enjoyed playing a really old friend, although not sure Tanya thought the same and Jenny just tried to get through the match without hurting herself anymore! 5-0 win gave Wales the silver medal.

Getting ready for the evening presentation wouldn’t be the same without a fire alarm activation once again because of Bec’s and her hair wrap! After a great dinner we headed to the city to dance the night away. An early flight wasn’t the best idea when we decided to get in at 3.30am but the question on everyone’s mind is did Bec’s really set her alarm?? I’m sure you will all hear the story haha!

Once again a great weekend and always a huge honour to captain this team, to come away with a silver medal is an amazing result…Will it be third time lucky for Wales next year in Cardiff?
