A weekend packed with five set battles, comebacks, serious grit and heart rates through the roof!
Friday night started with our usual huge battle against England. A 5-0 that definitely wasn’t as comfortable as it sounds. Anna started us with a 3-2 (after being 2-0 up just saying) Gemma came back from injury straight into a five set win, I followed with a 3-2 win of my own and a double fist pump to the balcony. Bec’s was flying before an unfortunate injury to Michelle and Jenny finished the job on debutant Kelly for a 5-0 win. A massive result after nearly five hours on court.
Saturday morning we faced Ireland knowing a win would guarantee a medal. Sarah (with no deep heat in sight) got us off to the perfect start with a 3-0 win, Gemma was back to five but just missed out to Siobhan (Miss Unbeaten), I won against my old friend Tanya, Bec’s stepped up with a 3-2 win to secure at least silver and Jen closed it out to seal the 4-1 win.
Final game against Scotland – win and we would be champions. Anna battled hard but lost 3-1, Sarah levelled it with a strong 3-0 and Gemma went to five AGAIN and delivered. Even had a little growl in the fifth! At 2-1 everything was on the line – I managed to get a 3-1 win against Lizzie to clinch it and spark the celebrations. Jenny stayed cool as ever to finish it off. Wales win 4-1.
With very tired and aching bodies, we still got ourselves ready for the party and celebrated in style.
The title was ours and for the first time ever, the cup crossed the bridge.
A huge thank you to the Welsh crew (and Ian) who supported us all weekend – you were incredible. I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and to captain this team.
We fought, we laughed, we were iconic (just for you Bec’s) and we went and won it! 🏴 🏆 🏴
