The first-ever Hirwaun Junior Squash Tournament proved to be a fantastic success, bringing together young players for a day full of competitive squash, great sportsmanship and plenty of fun. The atmosphere throughout the day was outstanding, with players, parents and supporters creating a welcoming and positive environment that showcased everything that is great about junior squash.
A massive thank you goes to every player who entered the tournament. The standard of behaviour, attitude and sportsmanship displayed by all competitors was exceptional from start to finish. Whether players were winning or losing, they represented themselves, their families and their clubs brilliantly. There were countless examples of encouragement, respect for opponents and officials, and genuine enjoyment of the occasion. Most importantly, everyone played with smiles on their faces and contributed to making the event such a memorable one.
C Grade
The C Grade title was won impressively by Zac Johnson, who completed the tournament without dropping a single game. Zac’s calm and composed approach was a standout feature of his performances throughout the day. He consistently selected the right shots at the right moments, keeping his opponents under pressure and controlling matches with maturity beyond his years. It was a thoroughly deserved victory.
Runner-up Musa Khan also had an excellent tournament. Musa produced some fantastic squash and caused one of the upsets of the day by defeating the talented Taylor Evans. His determination and attacking play earned him a well-deserved place in the final.
A special mention must also go to Jaxson Davis and Logan Bayliss, both of whom were playing competitive matches for the very first time. Despite the challenge, neither player gave up for a single point and both competed with huge smiles throughout the day. Their attitude was a credit to themselves and exactly what junior sport is all about.
B Grade
The B Grade produced some of the tightest and most exciting matches of the entire tournament, with many contests going right down to the wire. Every player contributed to a highly competitive draw that kept spectators entertained throughout the day.
The title was won by Sam Thomas, who overcame Finn Parry in what was undoubtedly the match of the tournament. The standard of squash on display was exceptional, with both players producing superb rallies, intelligent shot selection and incredible determination. The large crowd gathered around the court rewarded the pair with loud applause after a match that showcased junior squash at its very best.
The remainder of the grade also delivered some outstanding performances. Future star Manny Taylor, at just eight years old, produced a remarkable display to finish third, demonstrating talent and composure well beyond his years.
Other standout performances came from Anders Martin and Indie Davies. Both players were involved in excellent battles against Freddie Thomas, with each match going right to the wire. Their determination, resilience and quality of play made them some of the most memorable contests of the day.
A Grade
The A Grade title was claimed by Jacob Green, who defeated Tyler Price in a high-quality final. It was a classy encounter between two talented players, with Jacob’s precise target hitting ultimately proving the difference. His ability to consistently find his areas and apply pressure allowed him to secure a deserved victory and lift the title.
Also competing in the A Grade was Poppy Lancaster, whose prowess with the racket caused the top seeds all sorts of problems throughout the day. Her skill, determination and fearless approach made her one of the most entertaining players to watch. The message to the rest of the field is simple – look out, she’s catching you up!
Congratulations must also go to Tristan Duggan, who produced performances that far exceeded what his current squash levels might suggest. Tristan showed great improvement and competed brilliantly against strong opposition.
Thank You
A huge thank you must go to all the parents and families who support these young players week after week. Without your commitment, encouragement and countless hours spent travelling to training sessions and tournaments, events like this simply would not be possible.
Thank you also to our referee team of Lee Thomas and Louis Stephens. Refereeing can often be a thankless task, but their professionalism and willingness to give up their time ensured the tournament ran smoothly from beginning to end.
Finally, a special thank you to Oliver Squash for providing the fantastic prizes. The quality of the prizes, particularly the eye-catching colourway and design of the bags, was a real talking point throughout the day. Judging by the reaction from players and parents alike, I suspect Oliver Squash may be receiving a few orders very soon!
The success of this first Hirwaun Junior Tournament has set a fantastic foundation for the future. If this year’s event is anything to go by, there is plenty to look forward to in the years
