Squash Stories

National Coach Greg Tippings is moving on after many years of service to Squash Wales, we caught up with him to talk about some of his proudest moments and his thoughts on the impact he’s had over the years.

How would you sum up your time with Squash Wales?

“It’s been my life for as long as I can remember — from being a junior player, senior player, squad coach and eventually National Coach. It really was a dream come true. I’ve met so many amazing people, visited incredible places and created memories that will stay with me forever.”

What have been some of your proudest moments during your time as National Coach?

“Watching players develop and seeing the opportunities the sport can provide has been incredibly rewarding. From players gaining scholarships at some of the most prestigious universities in the world, to seeing young players enter the pathway and eventually compete as senior professional players on the world stage — those moments have made me extremely proud.”

Which players, teams or achievements stand out most to you?

“I wouldn’t want to single anyone out because every player has their own journey, goals and achievements. Success can too easily be defined purely by trophies or medals. For me, helping players grow, develop and reach their potential is the real measure of success. Squash gives players so many life skills and opportunities that cannot always be measured on a medal table.”

What have you enjoyed most about working with Welsh players and families?

“That’s easy — the passion they have for this wonderful country and the pride they place on representing their communities and Wales. The support, commitment and love for the sport has always been very special to see.”

How have you seen the junior programme develop over the years?

“Absolutely. As I mentioned in my farewell message, the fact we now have over 30 players involved in the U11 programme is testament to the hard work of so many people and the appetite for our great sport. The structure, standards and opportunities within the pathway have developed enormously over the years.”

What makes Welsh squash special in your opinion?

“The players, the clubs and the environment. We are such a close-knit community, which at times can present challenges, but overall it really feels like being part of one big family. That togetherness is something very special.”

Is there a particular memory or event that you’ll always remember?

“Being runner-up in the World Team Championships is something that will stay with me forever and something I was privileged to be part of, albeit many years ago now. Experiences like that never leave you.”

What advice would you give to young Welsh players coming through the pathway?

“Work hard, stay humble, watch the best players and have confidence in your own ability. The world is your oyster — grab it with both hands and enjoy the journey.”

Who would you like to thank as you leave the role?

“A big thank you to everyone at Squash Wales. In particular Russell, David and Tom — it has been a pleasure working with you all. Special thanks also to Sally Davis and Chris Powell, who have been incredible servants to Welsh squash, and to Mark Harris for his support, knowledge and no-nonsense approach. Lastly, Richard Wright, who does so much day in and day out to help drive the game forward — I will be forever grateful for your support and friendship.”

What’s next for you?

“I will be taking up a role in padel, which is something I’ve wanted to explore further for some time. As I get older, it felt like now or never, and I’m excited for a new challenge and the opportunities that lie ahead.”

Greg has been an integral part of Squash Wales for a number of years, and his dedication to developing the game at every level has left a lasting mark on the programme. As National Coach, he has inspired players, supported coaches, and helped shape a stronger future for squash in Wales. We wish him every success in the next chapter of his career, and have no doubt he will bring the same passion and commitment to everything he takes on.

Thank you, Greg – from everyone at Squash Wales.
