The final weekend of the Home International Championship’s had arrived. With all of our team having played in lower age groups it was finally time to compete in our own age group!
Lynne Davies, Jill Campion, Sian Johnson and Fiona Curthoys all trying to retain the trophy won in 2024 and 2025. Could we make it a hat trick!!
Up against the best players in the age group from England, Ireland and Scotland there are never any easy matches and this proved to be the case.
Friday night Scotland. First up was Sian Johnson against Maureen. Sian got off to a nervy start and lost the first game! But as a seasoned campaigner she settled and won the match 3-1. Next to play was Jill Campion against Pauline Douglas. This match was always going to be tough between 2 previous World Masters champions. An exciting match saw Jill go 2 games up then Pauline staged a comeback to win 3-2. 1 all in matches. The deciding match was between Lynne and Bernie. Bernie took the first game but Lynne came through to win 3-1. Wales won 2-1.
It was an early start on Saturday morning. Sian kicked off the day with a 3-0 win. Jill followed with a win. Fiona Curthoys battled in a tough match against Maureen Duke to win 3-2. Wales won 3-0.
The afternoon session Wales V England. Both teams having won their other matches this was the decider. What a match!!! First to play was Fiona against Leslie Sturgess who was last years British Open and Closed
Champion. The match ebbed and flowed, with everyone on the edge of their seats Fiona battled brilliantly to win 3-2. Next to play Jill Campion and Julianne Pegram. Jill went 2 down whilst Lynne and Sue Pynegar were pacing up and down in the corridor!!! Were they going to have to play the deciding match!! But Jill took the 3rd steadied herself and won the next 2 games. Jill won 3-2
With the match and title already decided Lynne and Sue battled it out in another 5 set match and Lynne came through to win 3-2. Wales 3-0.
With the title retained it was time to put on the glad rags, off to the presentation and make a few shapes on the dance floor!!!
A great weekend of very competitive squash, against old adversaries and friends!
Thanks to organisers, refs and venues a lovely time enjoyed by all.
