What a fantastic weekend, possibly the best yet.
The weekend started with a long-ish drive and a safe but late arrival. Even a bus lane and a PCN didn’t dampen spirits.
The ladies got off to a good start vs England. Our captain was pitted against theirs. Previous form suggested it wouldn’t be in our favour; however, after recovering from 2-0 down to clinch it 3-2 (12-10 in the 5th), we were off to a great start. This was followed by a loss for No. 3 Tracey and a win from our national champion, Helen at No.1. Sian (No. 4), with a decisive 3-0 win, clinched the match for us. Finally, Jill had a tough game to finish.
Scotland on Saturday was always going to be a challenge, and their standard was superb. We tried hard, but they were too strong, and we went down 5-0. Helen (No. 1) played a superb match vs Kim.
Ireland on Saturday afternoon was going to be the decider for 2nd place.
Wendy met her bête noire. Having lost 12-10 in the 5th in both the British and European Championships, the money was elsewhere, however, a 3-1 win put us on track. Tracey then clinched it 13-11 in the 5th and Helen, won 3-1 sealing the victory. Sian had a tough match vs the Irish captain, who was on excellent form, and finally Jill’s decisive 3-0 win rounded off our 2nd place in style.
Silver in 2025 and 2026 means there’s plenty to celebrate and the evening was a triumph. Well done to England Squash: an excellent venue, brilliant referees (especially the university students), and a playlist that kept us on the dance floor from 8 till late.
Roll on next year.
Wendy Norris.
