Location: Cardiff, Wales April 5-7, 2024
The U13 & U15 5 Nations Junior Squash Championships took place in Cardiff over the weekend of April 5-7, showcasing the emerging talent in the age groups from Wales, England, Ireland, Scotland, and France. This prestigious event saw national teams compete, each comprising the five best girls and boys from their respective nations.
Representing Wales in the U13 category were Grace Breach, Zoe Powell, Eliza Hales, Jack Baldwin, Lennie Lewis, Jacob Green, and Leon Lauder. The U15 team consisted of Evie Salisbury, Erin Lauder, Gethin Poole, Noah Allnatt, Thomas Fenlon, and Reuben Davies.
For many of these young players, this championship marked their first opportunity to represent their countries, signifying a crucial stage in their development. Despite facing tough competition, the Welsh teams displayed admirable determination, although they ultimately finished with defeats against the other participating countries. Nonetheless, the majority of players earned their first caps, a testament to their dedication and talent.
Standout performances included Madalena Sidoli and Eliza Hales, Wales’ respective number 1 girls, who secured victories against their French, Scottish, and Irish counterparts. England asserted their dominance once again by clinching victory in both the U13 and U15 Championships, although they faced stiff competition from a strong French team. Scotland secured a commendable third place in both age categories.
The efforts of coaches Greg Tippings, Sally Davis, and Rich Wright were instrumental in preparing the Welsh players for this competition. The championship provided invaluable experience at the national level for the players and valuable insights for the coaches to guide their future development.
Several players, including Madalena, Erin, Leon, Thomas, and Noah, will carry this experience forward as they represent Wales in the upcoming U15 European Junior Team Championships in Porto next month.
Overall, the event was a celebration of squash, bringing together players from different countries and providing them with an experience that will leave a lasting impact. Squash emerged as the true winner, and Wales eagerly anticipates next year’s championships in France.
