W065 Team-Lynne Davies (C) Jill Campion and Wendy Norris
Wales were the 2024 winners of the inaugural W065 Cup. 2025 Edinburgh and defending the title was going to be a tough challenge!
First team to play on Friday night were Scotland. Wendy Norris started us off with a win. Then Jill Campion played her old adversary Pauline Douglas. Always a battle but 2-0 Wales. Lynne completed the match with a win. 3-0 Wales.
Saturday morning and next up England. Wendy was playing the British Open finalist Julie Ann Pegram. Wendy off to a brilliant start and 2 games up followed by 2 very tight games 11-9 but England took the match 2-3.
The tension was building!
Next up Jill Campion v Karen Hume. Many British, European and World titles between them and both having recent injuries. Some great rallies and a win for Jill.
With the match at finely poised at 1-1 it was all on the final match between the British 065 Champion Leslie Sturgess and Welsh Masters Champion Lynne Davies. A tight match with Leslie taking the first game but Lynne came through to win 3-1. 2-1 Wales.
A quick lunch and no time to relax. Back to the courts to face Ireland. We just needed to win to secure the trophy.
The low ceiling on court 2 put an end to the lob game. Wendy started the afternoon session off with a win, Jill followed with a win over Maureen. With the match won Lynne made it Wales 3-0.
A fantastic performance by the Welsh team to retain the trophy!
We had great matches with our Irish, English and Scottish opponents and lovely to see them again.
Thanks to Scottish Squash their organisers, refs and the Edinburgh Club.
We had a great weekend and hope to see everyone in Cardiff next year!
